A new app for Jaguar's InControl infotainment system allows paying for fuel from a vehicle's dashboard via a new partnership with Shell.

This follows recent implementations for cashless transactions via a vehicle’s dashboard for a selection of activities ranging from parking to pizzas. Now Jaguar has made in-car payment for fuel a reality via a partnership with Shell.

Owners of 2018 F-Pace, XE, and XF vehicles in the UK can now pay for fuel at a Shell station via an app that’s part of the vehicle's in-dash infotainment system, and the feature will be rolled out globally to other markets later in the year.

Jaguar Land Rover said its “new in-car cashless payment app will be available across every Jaguar ... equipped with Jaguar InControl Apps, as well as the latest Land Rover models fitted with Land Rover InControl Apps.”

Once the Shell app is downloaded to the InControl infotainment system, it can be used to locate the nearest Shell station via the car’s navigation system. And instead of using a card at the pump or paying cash at the counter, Jaguar owners can choose the grade and amount of fuel from the comfort of their car using the Shell app.

The transaction is processed using a PayPal or Apple Pay account, and Android Pay will be added later in 2017.

Upon purchase, a receipt is displayed on the infotainment system screen and can also be sent to a preferred email address for integration into expense-tracking software.

Paying for fuel from the dashboard is the first in a series of cashless transactions Jaguar Land Rover has planned. “We are working with leaders in e-commerce such as Shell to enable our customers to enjoy cashless motoring via their car’s touchscreen,” Peter Virk, director of connected car and future technology for Jaguar Land Rover (pictured above), said in a statement.

“Whether it’s paying for fuel, parking, tolls, or even at a drive-through restaurant, the aim of cashless motoring is to make life easier for our customers,” he added. And make them more loyal to the British car brand as well as to Shell and other businesses that sign on
