Despondency is no stranger to Americans when contemplating the years of gloom following the start of the Great Recession. Sadly, it is not a secret that our prospects for experiencing any meaningful relief from the malaise in the near-term are, plainly, not good.
The US economy by some estimates is expected to grow at a pitiful rate of only 2% for the foreseeable future. Most consider the root cause of this frustrating era in our history to be the collapse of the US real estate market in general, and particularly the US housing market which was artificially propped up by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

City Health Care Partnership Community Interest Company (CHCP CIC), which provides community health care in the UK’s Hull and the East Riding regions, has appointed leasing and salary sacrifice provider, Tusker, to provide a salary sacrifice car scheme as part of its flexible staff benefits scheme.
Under the terms of the scheme named Flextra, CHCP CIC staff will be able to select cars with a carbon cap of up to 150g/km in return for surrendering a proportion of their salary through Tusker’s SalarySacrifice4Cars (SS4C) scheme, which has proved so popular with organizations throughout both public and private sectors.

To write the ‘Crystal Ball’ year-end piece is a recipe for disaster. Readers might look at it and forget it – but the editor will remind you at the end of the year just how inaccurate your best predictions were!
This year I want to comment on three 2012 imponderables - politics, economics and, briefly, the development of the automotive world.

2012: it's Olympic year. Will the UK cover itself in glory or cringe with shame?
Lord Coe appears to be doing an admirable job in steering the construction and build-up but he has no control over the transport infrastructure. More's the pity as a transport nightmare in our capital beckons next summer. While affecting the business car and fleet sector for 16 days, other factors will come into play throughout the year outside the pursuit for gold.

Too often we stay within our comfort zones, within the business silo of everyday activities rather than looking at the wider surrounding commercial and economic environment which might impact on business.
In a period of economic flat lining, or recession, the encouragement to stay within that silo is even stronger – ‘we don’t have time to look outside’ – or – ‘it’s too depressing’.
