Autonomous vehicle specialist Waymo is working with ride-sharing pioneer Lyft to offer driverless car services through its app.
Six months ago, Waymo launched Waymo One, a commercial self-driving ride-hailing service in the Phoenix area.
It serves more than 1,000 riders who hail Waymo cars each day.
Now the company says it is to deploy 10 Waymo vehicles on the Lyft platform over the next few months. Once Waymo vehicles are on the platform, Lyft users in the area will have the option to select a Waymo directly from the Lyft app for eligible rides.
Although vehicles will be autonomous, there will be employees behind the wheel for safety.
John Krafcik, Waymo CEO, said: “We’re committed to continuously improving our customer experience, and our partnership with Lyft will also give our teams the opportunity to collect valuable feedback.”
The move marks the first time Waymo has made its vehicles available outside its own service.
Krafcik added: “Waymo and Lyft share a commitment to make our roads safer and transportation more accessible. We’re excited to collaborate with the Lyft team as we bring fully self-driving technology to the world.”
